Kiaan Singh
Student & Writer — SCIS Shanghai
I’m Kiaan, a high school student at Shanghai Community International School in Shanghai. Growing up in an international environment has allowed me to approach my learnings with fiery curiosity and developed in me a growing tendency to question ideas rather than take them at face value.
I place extensive value on gaining knowledge. I’m constantly trying to learn new academic and theoretical ideas; through classroom teachings and discussion, and through independent explorations. I’m particularly drawn to history, as it helps me understand how present systems and beliefs have evolved over time, and why they continue to shape societies today. Alongside this, I enjoy mathematics for the clarity and structure it brings to problem-solving. I also spend my free time engaging in online debates and conversations that range from politics to philosophy and theology. These discussions often push me to build my own perspectives and weigh several well-put-together arguments against each other.
Besides my intellectual interests, I enjoy playing tennis and volleyball. I follow both sports, and chess, religiously at the professional level. I also like to consume literature, encompassing poetry like the works of Angelou and Tagore, novels written by Ruta Sepetys and Suzanne Collins, and short stories alike. I cast a wide net by reading literature of all genres and times in an attempt to be an adept conversationalist in any setting. I am also an avid music listener and am currently enjoying songs by my favorite lyricist, Hozier.
At the core, I am driven by a desire to keep learning, both in depth and across disciplines, and to better understand the ideas that shape the world around us.
